Horse riding to Son Kul Lake

Duration: 6 days, 5 nights
Season: June – September (possible to organize winter horseback riding tour)
Route: Bishkek – Kochkor – Kyzart – Kilemche – Son Kul Lake – Bishkek 
Level of difficulty: This tour is developed for beginners in horse riding.

Trekking up to high altitude Son Kul Lake. It's the second largest lake in Kyrgyzstan. It's situated on the high mountain flat plateau at the altitude 3016m surrounded by endless green pastures and smooth hills Son Kul Too ridge from the North, Moldo Too from the South. The Lake is 278 square km, maximum depth is 14m, the lenght is 27 km, the width is 16m.It belongs to Naryn river basin.
The area around of the lake is used by the shepherds of the Kochkor, Naryn and At Bashi regions for summer pastures for their flocks. During trekking you will be like a nomad, leaving in a real nomad's yurt. 

 

Day 1
Airport “Manas” – Bishkek – Kochkor (230km)

Meeting in the airport. Transfer to Bishkek. Drive towards Kochkor. Visiting historical complex "Burana Tower", which is UNESCO heritage. Climb up the Tower (23m). Stop in Boom gorge. Passing by Orto Tokoi reservoir. Optionally: felt art workshop, the show of making Ala Kiyiz and Shyrdak carpets. Dinner and overnight in a guest house. (LD)

Day 2
Kochkor village – Kyzart village – trek to Kilemche (75 km by car)

Transfer to Kyzart village passing over Kyzart pass. Meeting with the trekking team and start horse-riding from the village. The way follows by the country road along Bazar-Turuk River. Then moderate ascent to Boordy pass. View from the pass opens a beautiful panorama of Kilemche jailoo (summer pasture) and surrounding mountains. Following short ride from the pass brings us to the yurt camp at the footstep of Djalgyz-Karagai pass. Optionally, it is possible to make an extra hike to the nearest hills to see how the sun hides behind endless mountain ranges. Dinner and overnight in yurts. (BLD)

Day 3
Trek from Kilemche to Son Ku
l
Meet morning and sunrise in yurt camp. Start ascent towards Djalgyz-Karagai pass after breakfast. The trail is moderate difficulty, wide and safe, however, slope gets steeper from the middle part of the ascent. Every step gives you a new view and excellent panorama to the Kyrgyz Range Mountains in the South. The top of the pass is nicely decorated with granite rock ribs. Slopes on the other side is slowly run down to Son-Kul Lake. Chain of smooth mountain range surrounds blue mirror of the lake creating unforgettable pictureы. Many nomad camps come across along the way. End of the way in Jaman-Echki area. Dinner and overnight in yurts. (BLD)

Elevation: +870m, -510m. Distance: 13-15km. Time on the way: around 4-5 hours by horse

Day 4
Son Kul 

Spend a full day on Son-Kul Lake. Hiking up to panoramic view to the Lake, swimming. Meals and overnight in yurts. (BLD)

Day 5
Son Kul  – Bishkek (320 km)

Spend last morning hours on Son Kul Lake and leave towards Bishkek. Drive along North shore of the Lake and over Kalmak Ashuu pass. Take the last view to Son Kul Lake from the pass and descent to the Valley of Tulok River. Serpentine of the road twist along steep slopes and descent into the deep mountain valley with crystal clear river and green grassy fields. On the way, you may see semi-wild herds of yak grazing in high mountains. Arrival in Bishkek in the afternoon. Short city tour. Farewell dinner. Overnight in a guest house/hotel. (BLD)

Day 6
Bishkek – Airport (35 km)

Transfer to the airport. Flight home. (B)
