It originated in times of Mongol invasion in the period 12-13 centuries in Central Asia. The tradition is still popular in some areas of Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Mongolia, in spite of beginning to disappear. The art of hunting is passed down from generation to generation from father to son. Usually, hunting is carried out for hares, young foxes. Training of hunting birds (falcons, golden eagles, hawks) takes about 3-4 years. They start training from an early age. The average lifespan of a bird is 40 years. When bird is captured, “Berkutchi” (the eagle hunter) put on the bird’s head special cap made of leather and put the bird into the cave, which is c constantly sways. Berkutchi sings songs to make bird geting used to his voice. In future bird will respond only to his call. When the bird has reached the age when it is ready to start hunting, Berkutchi shows to the golden eagle the fur of those animals on which it should hunt. So the bird gets used to the smell and characteristics of prey. After hunting bird returns back to the owner.
